We love the sound and I think it is beautiful to look at, very easy to hear each other on the stage. People we talked to, our friends who were in the audience said the sound was wonderful.
Emerson String Quartet
The acoustic here seems to be absolutely wonderful. It’s a great size for a piano recital, and the audience is tremendous: the listening, the silence, and the concentration, was really fantastic.
Paul Lewis, pianist
It’s good for chamber music or for orchestral. It was really nice. Lovely audience.
Sir Roger Norrington, Conductor
…but also very brilliant and reverberant, so you can play with that when you are performing and really listen to the sound that’s going out of the piano and into the hall. I like it a lot.
Angela Hewitt, pianist
This is such a beautiful hall – it’s a gem of space. It sounds, which is of course the most important, it sounds beautiful. It feels good, it’s warm, it’s intimate… It’s a very musical space. It’s really a pleasure to be in, so, I’m very happy.
Hélène Grimaud, pianist
The Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre, a focal point of the Centennial Campus, is a generous gift from Dr. Lee Shau Kee. The Grand Hall at the Lecture Centre was completed in September 2012.
The Hall is built on the site of an underground reservoir that served various areas of the Hong Kong Island. Now, with its remarkable architectural design and dazzling acoustics, the Hall aspires to be a vital “reservoir of knowledge” for academic and cultural activities, serving the region and beyond.
Designed by Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd., the Hall has been built as a modern and multi-functional box-in-box structure, capable of supporting a wide variety of professional and international events such as concerts, ceremonies, academic conferences, and lectures.
Finished in high quality oak and equipped with a world-class acoustic system designed by Jaffe Holden in association with Shen Milsom & Wilke, the Hall provides excellent sightlines and projects a clear detailed sound, well-blended with a touch of warmth. It promises its audience a unique and memorable acoustic experience.
The Grand Hall serves primarily as a teaching venue for centrally-timetabled lectures of the University.
