Programme

This concert is part of  'Schubert’s 12 Piano Sonatas with Paul Lewis' Series.

Piano Sonata No. 15 in C major, D. 840
Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, D. 664
Piano Sonata No. 16 in A minor, D. 845

The two-piano works in this closing concert are dedicated to dynamic Russian romanticism and the triumphant artistic return amidst hardships of three composers: Medtner’s Op. 58 reflects a near-ritualistic insistence to compose daily despite the dangers of war; Rachmaninov’s mighty Suite No. 2 proves his talent again after the cold reception of his First Symphony; and the ‘near-riot’ premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring only adds on its eminence!
